Gautam Mukharya is a seasoned banker and Risk professional having over 27 years of experience in financial sector across multiple geographies, with specialization in credit, enterprise and climate risks. Gautam is currently on a deputation from HSBC Group to Saudi Awwal Bank (SAB), as Head of Wholesale Portfolio Risk Management and Senior Advisor, ESG Risk.
Until 2023, Gautam was the Chief Risk Officer (CRO) for HSBC Singapore, and also had functional responsibilities over the Risk teams in select Asia Pacific countries. He has spent over two decades working for HSBC Group in a variety of roles across Asia Pacific countries, where he was a member of bank’s Executive Committee and accountable to the Board & Regulators for managing enterprise wide risks across all risk types, businesses & legal entities.
Gautam is passionate about sustainability and climate risk, and collaborates extensively with the industry and the regulators. He chaired the industry work-group that designed MAS' Regulatory guidelines on Environmental Risk Management (ENRM) for banks in 2020 and the Guidelines for Responsible Financing issued by ABS. He also chaired the risk management work-stream of Green Finance Industry Taskforce (GFIT) and was a member of Industry Advisory Panel (IAP) to ASEAN Capital Market Regulators and Ministries of Finance, where he chaired the work-stream on Transition Standards. In his new role in the Saudi Arabia, he is working very closely with local industry & Saudi Monetary Authority (SAMA) to help bring an alignment on key priorities, including chairing the ESG risk management efforts on behalf of the industry.
Gautam is a technology expert and enthusiast and has been very active in the innovation eco-system in Singapore as a thought leader, sponsor, mentor and advisor to many Fintechs. During his tenor in Singapore, he actively contributed to the National KYC Utility project as well as to the Green ecosystem in use of AI for solving Climate Risk Data challenges. Over the years, he has been part of the Judging panel for the Fintech Awards as well as a demo day judge for the Global Hackcelerator programme as part of the Singapore Fintech Festival (SFF), a role that he continued even after relocation. Gautam also serves on various industry bodies aimed at upskilling and talent development, and sits on the Global Board of Advisors for number of Fintechs in the field of ESG and Risk management as well as venture capital funds headquarter out of Singapore and UK.
Gautam was conferred with ‘Distinguished Fellow’ award by the Institute of Banking & Finance (IBF) in 2021 for his contributions in the field of risk management, invocation and sustainability. He holds a Bachelor of Engineering and a Master’s in Business Management from the University of Delhi, and had previously worked with the Indian subsidiary of Standard & Poor’s before joining HSBC.
