Professor Foo’s research can be broadly grouped into the field of applied cyber security. National critical infrastructure systems such as electricity substations and water treatment plants are becoming more connected and are susceptible to cyber-attacks. Professor Foo’s research work looks for new ways to detect cyber attackers in critical infrastructure systems and prevent those attackers from being effective. Recently Professor Foo has been applying these lessons learned to analysing financial transactions to detect money laundering and other financial crimes.

This session will explore the challenges posed by the next gen Fintech for Malicious purposes including FraudGPT, WormGPT, and the soon to be released DarkBERT. It will reflect on what challenges this will pose for customers, banks and their regulators. We will also discuss how Adversarial AI (AAI) systems that target AI systems via evasion attacks, data poisoning and model extractions. We’ll also consider how tightening regulations in response to these threats may lead to unintended consequences, such as greater financial exclusion for vulnerable populations. The session will conclude by covering how to prepare for these emerging threats through staff training, cyber solutions and enhancing ERM strategies and customer awareness campaigns.
