To promote the IT/ITeS industry, since its inception in 1991, STPI has been working towards equitable and inclusive IT-led growth across India, which in turn has helped promote software exports and nurture entrepreneurship in the country. STPI has expanded its presence across India to disperse the IT/ITeS industry to Tier-II and Tier-III cities.

Today, STPI operates with 11 jurisdictional directorates and 65 centres, of which 57 are in Tier-II and Tier-III cities. These centres have played a pivotal role in boosting IT/ITeS exports from their respective regions, generating employment, and fostering startups to develop software products. By working closely with all stakeholders and providing a single-window clearance system, STPI has been instrumental in transforming the country into a preferred IT destination, as evidenced by the remarkable growth in exports by STPI-registered units, from Rs. 52 crores in 1992-93 to Rs. 9.44 lakh crores in 2023-24.

With respect to innovation, start-ups, and product/IP creation in the field of emerging technologies, STPI has been supporting and promoting the startup ecosystem across India through the establishment of Centres of Entrepreneurship (CoEs) and the Next Generation Incubation Scheme (NGIS).

To ensure India builds leadership in emerging technologies such as IoT, Blockchain, FinTech, Artificial Intelligence, Augmented and Virtual Reality, Medical Electronics and Healthcare, Gaming and Animation, Machine Learning, Data Science and Analytics, Cyber Security, Chip Designing, and ESDM, among others, and to cultivate the next wave of budding entrepreneurs, 24 CoEs have been set up using a collaborative approach at various locations across the country.

NGIS is a comprehensive incubation programme aimed at fostering India’s prominence as a global leader in the development, production, and distribution of innovative, efficient, and secure software products. It is designed to cultivate a thriving software product ecosystem in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, enhancing the robust IT industry, promoting sustained growth, creating new employment opportunities, and increasing competitiveness. NGIS has been rolled out across 12 STPI locations, including Agartala, Bhilai, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Dehradun, Guwahati, Jaipur, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Mohali, Patna, and Vijayawada.
