Roland Wee is an experienced engineer and businessman who has designed and constructed sophisticated facilities for large multinational companies over the last 50 years. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Southampton University, England, in 1967, on a Commonwealth Scholarship awarded by the Singapore Government. He served on the Boards of Directors for several public and private institutions, including utilities provider Singapore PowerGas, property developer DBS Land, and industrial conglomerate SembCorp. He also represented Singapore at the IAEA conference in Vienna.
In 1973, Roland founded MEI Engineering Group and has been taking the roles of the Chairman and President of MEI. The Group provides planning, design, and construction of manufacturing and chemical plants in Singapore, China, and Asia Pacific countries. Under Roland’s leadership, MEI worked on projects for Fortune 500 companies in the microelectronics, semiconductor, petrochemical, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, etc., industries since 1973. MEI was ranked in the top 225 global Engineering Design and Build companies in 1991, 2000, and 2001, according to Engineering News Record Magazine.
In 2015, Roland found RWDC Group with co-founder Dr Daniel Carraway. RWDC is engaged in the research, development, production and sale of PHA, a family of safe, natural and biodegradable materials to replace traditional plastics. Since incorporation, Roland has been appointed as the Executive Chairman and the Chief Engineer of RWDC. He is instrumental in the setting of the development strategies of RWDC. He also leads the engineering team of RWDC in designing and managing the construction of the PHA production facilities globally. After 6 rounds of fundraising, the valuation of RWDC exceeded US$1 billion in 2021.
In 2024, Roland found Somatich Health Group with co-founders Dr Zhang Dongxiao and Dr Zhai Hongbo. Somatic is engaged in the offering of preventive rehabilitation care to employees and patients with AI-powered digital technologies in Asian and European countries through the licensing of the AI facilitated technologies which have been using in the US and Canada since 3 years ago by the holding company of Somatic in the US. Since incorporation, Roland has been taking the role of the Chairman of Somatich Health Group to lead the corporate development of Somatic.
Roland was a long-time member of the Singapore Rotary Club. For many years. He has been participating in activities and generously donating time and money toward needy and charitable causes.
